KATZ’S Delicatessen

The legendary Katz’s Deli https://www.katzsdelicatessen.com/  has been a neighborhood staple since 1888. In the twentieth century it was home to millions of newly immigrated families. The restaurant is packed with photos of famous people on the walls. It has been featured in many films and books, as it is part of the city’s culture and history. As a New Yorker, even if you’ve never been to Katz’s deli, you know of Katz’s deli.

It’s located on the corner of 205 East Houston between Ludlow and Orchard street, in the East Village. You cannot miss it!

When you walk in you get a pink ticket that you must return to the cashier to pay, and on your way out. ($50 fine if you lose your ticket) Most of the deli is self-service. There are four different stations and every station has a specific purpose. There is a back counter, sides/drinks, cutter and grill station.

The deli is known for their house-cured pastrami and corned beef sandwiches. Their corned beef and pastrami is free of chemicals and water. Curing their famous meats can take up to 30 days. Also popular are their turkey and brisket sandwiches, all which are served at the counters in the center.

They go through 25,000 plus pounds of meat every week. That alone can give you a sense for how busy they are. The eatery is opened 24 hours on the weekend, and 24 hours there is a line to order.

The last counter is where you can order specialty items like latkes and blintzes. This counter is also where you can buy and ship any of their goods nationwide. During World War II, the owners three sons were all serving in the armed forces and the family started a tradition of sending food to their sons. “Send A Salami to Your Boy In The Army,” has been their slogan since.

Understand that they only use the best cuts for their meats and for that reason they must charge big bucks.
